Tour in the early stages of
development . . .
This tour developed from some
suggestions from fellow architourists after my last Updates email. The upcoming trip to Mississippi and
Louisiana made some people think about the Frank Lloyd Wright Rosenbaum House
in Florence, Alabama. I admit this one
has been on my list for quite some time and I have tinkered with plans for a
trip. Here’s what I’m thinking:
Tour: Contemporary Architecture in Alabama and Southeastern
Tennessee
Dates: Sunday, November 2, 2014 – Thursday,
November 6, 2014,
beginning
and concluding at Atlanta-Hartsfield International Airport
FYI: These dates dovetail with the dates of the
Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy Conference in Phoenix. If you wish to do both, you can fly directly from Phoenix to Atlanta at the end of the
conference.
Sites
I’m planning to include:
A Moshe Safdie designed house in Birmingham, Alabama
Paul Rudolph designed residences in Auburn and Athens, Alabama
The renown Paul Rudolph designed chapel at Tuskegee University,
Tuskegee, Alabama
The Rural Studio, Newbern, Alabama, started by the late Samuel Mockbee
If
you get a chance to see the documentary “Citizen Architect” about Samuel
Mockbee and the Rural Studio, do!
The Frank Lloyd Wright Rosenbaum House in Florence, Alabama,
a meticulously preserved Usonian, now
a house museum
The Chapel of the Apostles at The University of the South, Sewanee,
Tennessee,
designed by Maurice Jennings + David
McKee, 2000.

. . . and more!!
